The Marangu Route: Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Your adventure on the popular 6 Days Marangu Route—known as the “Coca-Cola Route”—begins at Marangu Gate with registration. This is the only route on Mount Kilimanjaro offering comfortable hut accommodation instead of camping, making it ideal for first-time climbers. Trek through lush rainforest filled with blue monkeys and unique birdlife. The gentle gradient makes this a perfect introduction, increasing your chances of summit success from day one.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leave the rainforest behind and enter the moorland zone, where giant lobelias and senecios dominate the landscape. This gradual and well-paced ascent is designed to support acclimatization, a key factor in achieving a high summit success rate. Enjoy incredible views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo in the distance as you arrive at Horombo Hut, your home for the next two nights.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
This extra acclimatization day is what makes the 6 Days Marangu Route one of the best choices for maximizing summit success. You will take a short hike toward Zebra Rocks (approx. 4,000m) before returning to Horombo Hut to rest. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy allows your body to adjust to altitude, significantly boosting your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak comfortably and safely.
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Today you cross the vast alpine desert known as the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Though the terrain is more barren, the steady pace is carefully managed by your experienced guides to conserve energy for summit night. Arrive early at Kibo Hut, where you will rest, hydrate, and prepare mentally for your final ascent to the Roof of Africa.
Day 5: Summit Push: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak & Back to Horombo Hut
Summit night begins around midnight. With the support of our expert guides—who monitor your pace and health every step—you will ascend slowly toward Gilman’s Point (5,685m). Witness a breathtaking sunrise over Africa before continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point on the continent! This unforgettable achievement is the result of proper acclimatization and a well-designed itinerary. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Your final descent takes you back through moorland and into the lush rainforest. This comfortable downhill trek marks the end of your successful Kilimanjaro climb via the Marangu Route. At the gate, you will receive your official summit certificate and celebrate with your mountain crew. Transfer back to your hotel with unforgettable memories of conquering Africa’s highest peak.
