How Many Days Do You Need for a Great Migration Safari?

Most Great Migration safaris need 5–7 days. Compare the right duration for Ndutu calving, Northern Serengeti crossings, drive-in and fly-in routes.

Most travellers need five to seven days for a Great Migration safari, including at least three nights in the Serengeti area where the herds are expected. For possible Mara River crossings, four nights in Northern Serengeti are preferable; a complete drive-in itinerary from Arusha or Moshi normally requires seven to nine days.

A shorter safari is possible, but travel time and unpredictable herd movements reduce the time available for migration viewing. Wildebeest follow rain, water and fresh grazing, and river crossings cannot be guaranteed.

Recommended Great Migration Safari Duration

Safari type Recommended duration Nights near the migration Best suited to
Short fly-in safari 4–5 days 3–4 nights Travellers with limited time
Ndutu calving safari 5–6 days 3 nights Calving, predators and photography
Northern Serengeti fly-in safari 5–6 days 4 nights Mara River-focused travel
Northern Serengeti drive-in safari 7–9 days 3–4 nights Serengeti, Ngorongoro and overland travel
Extended Northern Circuit safari 9–12 days 4 nights Migration plus other national parks

The total number of days matters less than the number of nights spent in the correct migration region. A seven-day itinerary with only one night near the herds can be less effective than a five-day fly-in safari with four nights in one area.

Is Three Days Enough?

Three days is generally too short for a drive-in Great Migration safari from Arusha or Moshi. Much of the trip would be spent travelling to and from Serengeti.

A three-day trip can work as a fly-in safari if flights arrive near the expected herd location. Even then, travellers may have only two full game-drive opportunities, leaving little flexibility if the animals move or weather affects the schedule.

Three days suits travellers who accept that they may see resident Serengeti wildlife without locating the largest migration herds or witnessing a river crossing.

Five to Six Days: Best for a Focused Migration Safari

Five or six days provide enough time for a focused safari when the route targets one migration stage. This duration works particularly well for Ndutu calving-season safaris and fly-in trips to Northern Serengeti.

A practical five-day fly-in structure is:

Day Route
Day 1 Fly to the selected Serengeti region and begin game viewing
Days 2–4 Full-day or flexible migration game drives
Day 5 Final game drive and return flight

For a drive-in Ndutu safari, six days allow time to travel through the Ngorongoro highlands and spend approximately three nights near the southern migration plains.

Five or six days are less practical for driving from Arusha to Northern Serengeti and back. The northern region is remote, and rushing the route creates long driving days.

Seven to Nine Days: Best for a Drive-In Safari

Seven to nine days are recommended for travellers driving to Northern Serengeti during the July–October migration period. This provides time for Central Serengeti, Northern Serengeti and Ngorongoro without changing accommodation every night.

A balanced eight-day route could include:

Day Suggested route
Day 1 Arusha or Moshi to the Ngorongoro or Karatu area
Day 2 Continue to Central Serengeti
Day 3 Central to Northern Serengeti
Days 4–6 Northern Serengeti migration game drives
Day 7 Northern to Central Serengeti
Day 8 Fly out or continue towards Ngorongoro and Arusha

Adding Ngorongoro Crater and a full return drive normally requires another day. Travellers can shorten the itinerary by flying out from Serengeti instead of driving back.

How Many Nights Are Needed for River Crossings?

Plan at least three nights, preferably four nights, in Northern Serengeti if seeing a possible Mara River crossing is your priority. This provides several game drives near the river instead of relying on one afternoon.

Wildebeest may gather near a crossing point and then move away. They can also wait for hours or days before entering the water, and crossings may occur at different sections of the Mara River.

More nights improve your opportunity to observe migration activity but cannot guarantee a crossing.

How Many Days Are Needed for Calving Season?

Allow five or six days for a drive-in calving safari, with at least three nights around Ndutu or the Southern Serengeti plains. A four- or five-day fly-in itinerary can also work.

The herds spread across a wide short-grass area, so a single night in Ndutu is limiting. Rain can also make some tracks difficult, requiring alternative game-drive routes.

January to March is the usual calving-season planning period, with February commonly receiving the strongest demand. Actual herd locations depend on rainfall and grazing conditions.

Drive-In Versus Fly-In Duration

Travel method Main advantage Main limitation Recommended minimum
Drive-in Lower flight cost and a gradual route through several ecosystems Long travel time, particularly to Northern Serengeti 6 days for Ndutu; 7–9 days for Northern Serengeti
Fly-in More time near the migration area Higher price and baggage restrictions 4–5 days
Drive-in and fly-out Combines overland sightseeing with a shorter return Includes one internal flight 6–8 days

Fly-in safaris are especially useful for short Northern Serengeti itineraries. Drive-in routes are better for travellers who also want to visit Ngorongoro, Tarangire or Central Serengeti.

How Duration Affects the Price

Adding days increases accommodation, park-fee, vehicle and guide costs. However, a very short fly-in safari is not always cheaper because internal flights and premium seasonal camps can raise the daily price.

A longer private drive-in safari can provide better per-day value when four to six travellers share the vehicle. Accommodation level, travel month and camp location still have the greatest effect on the final amount.

Use the Great Migration safari cost guide to compare budget, midrange and luxury prices.

Who Needs More Time?

Consider adding one or two days if:

  • You are travelling with young children
  • You want shorter daily drives
  • Wildlife photography is a priority
  • Your itinerary covers both Central and Northern Serengeti
  • You are travelling during the rainy months
  • You want to include Ngorongoro Crater
  • You prefer not to change camps frequently

Photographers benefit from four nights in one migration region because repeated morning and afternoon drives provide different light, behaviour and wildlife opportunities.

Common Duration Mistakes

Counting Travel Days as Full Safari Days

A seven-day itinerary may include two or three long transfer days. Check the actual number of full game-drive days near the migration.

Staying One Night in Several Areas

Moving camps every day reduces useful wildlife-viewing time. Spend longer in the region that matches your travel month.

Driving to Northern Serengeti on a Short Itinerary

A four- or five-day drive-in trip to Kogatende can feel rushed. Fly in or increase the total duration.

Adding Too Many National Parks

Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti can work together, but every additional park uses travel time. Keep a short migration safari focused on the appropriate Serengeti region.

KiliPori Local Planning Advice

For most travellers, KiliPori recommends six days for an Ndutu calving safari, five to six days for a Northern Serengeti fly-in safari or eight days for a Northern Serengeti drive-in route.

Protect at least three complete nights in the expected migration area before adding other parks. If the itinerary becomes too long or expensive, remove a secondary destination rather than reducing Northern Serengeti or Ndutu to one night.

Daily game-drive direction can be adjusted using recent reports, but extra days cannot guarantee a river crossing or a particular herd location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is five days enough for the Great Migration?

Yes, if you fly into the appropriate Serengeti region or focus on Ndutu and Southern Serengeti. Five days is usually too short for driving to Northern Serengeti and back.

Are seven days enough for Serengeti and Ngorongoro?

Yes. Seven days can cover Ngorongoro, Central Serengeti and one migration region, although Northern Serengeti routes may benefit from eight or nine days.

How long should photographers stay?

Photographers should consider four nights in the main migration area. This provides several morning and afternoon sessions without frequent camp transfers.

Should I spend more nights in Central or Northern Serengeti?

From July to October, prioritise Northern Serengeti if river-crossing activity is the main goal. Central Serengeti is useful for resident wildlife and as a stop on a drive-in route.

KiliPori Safaris can plan a focused migration itinerary based on your available days, travel month, preferred Serengeti region and budget.
