2 Days Mikumi Safari by SGR Train – Dar es Salaam to Mikumi
The 2 Days Mikumi Safari from Dar es Salaam by SGR Train combines Tanzania's modern railway with a private wildlife safari in Mikumi National Park. Instead of completing the entire journey from Dar es Salaam by road, you travel by SGR to Morogoro, where your Kilipori Safaris driver-guide meets you for the onward private transfer to Mikumi.
The Dar es Salaam–Morogoro section of Tanzania's Standard Gauge Railway covers approximately 300 kilometres. Using the train for the first part of the journey creates a distinctive alternative for travelers who want to experience Tanzania beyond a conventional road safari.
After arriving in Morogoro, continue privately toward Mikumi National Park, a protected area covering more than 3,200 square kilometres. Its Mkata plains support elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, antelopes and predators including lions. More than 400 bird species have also been recorded in the Mikumi ecosystem.
Kilipori Safaris structures the two-day itinerary around wildlife viewing on both days. After the SGR journey and road transfer on Day 1, you enter Mikumi for an afternoon game drive. Day 2 begins with another private game drive before returning to Morogoro for the SGR journey back to Dar es Salaam.
This package is particularly suitable for couples, families, solo travelers and visitors staying in Dar es Salaam who want a short Southern Tanzania safari with a combination of modern rail travel and private wildlife viewing.
Tour Highlights
Day by Day Itinerary
Your 2 Days Mikumi Safari from Dar es Salaam by SGR Train begins with an early transfer to the SGR station in Dar es Salaam for your scheduled journey to Morogoro.
Board the modern SGR train and travel west from Tanzania's coastal commercial capital toward Morogoro. Your exact departure and arrival times are arranged around the confirmed Tanzania Railways schedule for your travel date.
On arrival at Morogoro SGR Station, your Kilipori Safaris driver-guide will be waiting with your private safari vehicle. After meeting your guide, continue by road toward Mikumi National Park.
Enter Mikumi National Park for an afternoon private game drive across the Mkata plains and surrounding wildlife habitats.
The open landscape provides opportunities to search for elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest and different antelope species. Your guide will also explore areas showing recent predator activity while looking for lions and other carnivores.
Because the game drive is private, your guide can adjust the pace around wildlife activity and your interests rather than following the schedule of an unrelated group.
As the afternoon ends, continue to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay near Mikumi.
Experience: SGR train + private road transfer + afternoon game drive
Begin the second day with an early breakfast before returning to Mikumi National Park for a private morning game drive.
The cooler morning period provides another opportunity to explore the Mkata plains, woodland margins and water-dependent habitats. Your guide will plan the route according to recent wildlife activity and sightings from the previous day.
Watch for elephants moving across the plains, buffalo herds, giraffes browsing along woodland edges and groups of zebras, wildebeest and antelopes. Hippos may be encountered around suitable water areas, while lions can sometimes be found resting or moving through their territories.
Mikumi also supports rich birdlife, with more than 400 recorded bird species, making the morning drive rewarding for travelers interested in photography and birdwatching as well as large mammals.
After completing your game drive, leave Mikumi and travel privately back toward Morogoro.
Your driver-guide will drop you at Morogoro SGR Station in time for your confirmed train to Dar es Salaam. Board the SGR and travel back to the city, completing your two-day combination of railway travel and private Tanzania safari.
