All you need to know for 3 Days Nyerere National Park Safari
This 3 Days Nyerere National Park Safari takes you deep into one of Africa's largest protected wildlife areas, where vast landscapes, thriving wildlife populations, and the mighty Rufiji River create an authentic safari experience far from the crowds of northern Tanzania.
Formerly part of the renowned Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere National Park is celebrated for its diverse habitats, including open savannahs, river channels, wetlands, acacia woodlands, and dense bush. The park is home to elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, zebras, wildebeests, African wild dogs, and over 400 bird species.
Unlike many safari destinations, Nyerere offers a unique combination of traditional game drives, river safaris, and guided walking safaris. Cruising along the Rufiji River allows visitors to observe wildlife from an entirely different perspective as elephants drink along the riverbanks, crocodiles bask in the sun, and hippos wallow in the water.
This safari is ideal for travelers seeking an authentic Southern Tanzania safari experience with excellent wildlife viewing, comfortable accommodation, and fewer vehicles compared to the more visited parks of Northern Tanzania.
Tour Highlights
Day by Day Itinerary
Your guide will collect you from Dar es Salaam at 6:00 AM for the journey to Nyerere National Park. Arriving around lunchtime, you'll settle into your lodge before heading out at 4:00 PM for a boat safari on the Rufiji River. This is the best time to watch elephants approach the riverbanks, hippos emerge from deeper channels, and crocodiles bask on exposed sandbanks. As the afternoon light softens, the river becomes one of the finest wildlife viewing locations in Southern Tanzania. Return to the lodge after sunset for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast at 6:30 AM, depart for a full-day game drive across the diverse landscapes of Nyerere National Park. The morning hours are particularly rewarding, with predators often active before temperatures rise. Throughout the day, your guide will explore river systems, open grasslands, and woodland habitats in search of lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and the park's famous African wild dogs. Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park before continuing your safari until late afternoon. Return to the lodge around 6:00 PM for dinner and relaxation.
Begin the day at 6:30 AM with a guided walking safari led by an armed ranger. Walking through the bush reveals a side of Africa often missed from a vehicle, from fresh animal tracks and bird calls to the smaller details that shape the ecosystem. After breakfast back at the lodge, depart around 10:00 AM for Dar es Salaam. Following a lunch stop en route, you will arrive in the city during the late afternoon, bringing your Southern Tanzania safari adventure to a close.
