Tour Highlights
Day by Day Itinerary
Moshi to Lemosho Trailhead: After breakfast, meet your KiliPori Safaris mountain team and travel for around three hours to Londorossi Gate for registration. Continue to the Lemosho trailhead, where the 8-day Kilimanjaro climbing tour begins.
Rainforest trek: Walk 6 km through Kilimanjaro’s montane forest for around three to four hours. The shaded trail passes giant ferns and moss-covered trees, with possible sightings of blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys.
Elevation: 2,100 m to 2,780 m
Distance: 6 km
Walking duration: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Forest to moorland: Leave Mti Mkubwa after breakfast and continue uphill as the rainforest gradually gives way to heather and moorland. The route becomes steeper while approaching Shira Ridge.
First views of Kibo: Walk 8 km in approximately five to six hours before descending gently to Shira 1 Camp. In clear conditions, the plateau provides wide views of Kibo, Mount Meru and the western slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Elevation: 2,780 m to 3,500 m
Distance: 8 km
Walking duration: Approximately 5–6 hours
Habitat: Heather and moorland
Plateau crossing: Continue east across the volcanic Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp. Today’s gentler route allows the body more time to adjust before reaching higher elevations.
Acclimatization walk: After arriving at camp, rest and join an optional short acclimatization walk if approved by the guide. Return to camp for dinner, a health check and preparation for the climb toward Lava Tower.
Elevation: 3,500 m to 3,850 m
Distance: 7 km
Walking duration: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Climb toward Lava Tower: Walk through the alpine desert toward Lava Tower at approximately 4,630 metres. Reaching this higher point before descending supports the “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization approach.
Descent to Barranco: After lunch near Lava Tower, descend into Barranco Valley and arrive beneath the Great Barranco Wall. The 10 km route takes approximately six to eight hours and ends at a lower sleeping elevation.
Elevation: 3,850 m to 4,630 m, descending to 3,976 m
Distance: 10 km
Walking duration: Approximately 6–8 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Barranco Wall experience: Begin with the guided climb over the Great Barranco Wall. This section involves careful walking and occasional use of the hands for balance, but it does not require technical climbing equipment.
Karanga Valley: Continue across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp. After approximately four to five hours of walking, rest, hydrate and complete another health assessment with the mountain guide.
Elevation: 3,976 m to 3,995 m
Distance: 5 km
Walking duration: Approximately 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Final approach to base camp: Leave Karanga and follow a rocky trail to Barafu Camp. The 4 km climb takes approximately three to four hours, allowing enough time to rest before the midnight summit attempt.
Birthday summit preparation: Eat an early dinner while the guide checks clothing, headlamps, water and summit equipment. The team will also prepare the personalized birthday banner and small symbolic cake before you rest for several hours.
Elevation: 3,995 m to 4,673 m
Distance: 4 km
Walking duration: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert
Midnight summit climb: Wake at approximately 11:00 p.m. and begin climbing around midnight. Move slowly across the steep scree toward Stella Point before following the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
Brief birthday summit moment: Reach the summit around sunrise, depending on pace and conditions. When approved by the lead guide, display the personalized banner, take photographs and cut a small symbolic birthday cake. This celebration will remain brief before the descent begins.
Descent and complete celebration: Return to Barafu Camp for food and a short rest, then continue to Mweka Camp. At the lower camp, enjoy a proper birthday cake, special meal, singing and celebration with the KiliPori mountain crew.
Elevation: 4,673 m to 5,895 m, descending to 3,100 m
Distance: 17 km
Walking duration: Approximately 12–16 hours
Habitat: Arctic summit and alpine descent
Final forest descent: After breakfast, descend 10 km through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. The walk takes approximately three to four hours, and the lower elevation brings warmer temperatures and thicker vegetation.
Certificate presentation: Complete the park procedures and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate when eligible. Meet the transfer vehicle for the journey to Moshi, where KiliPori Safaris can arrange an optional birthday dinner or hotel celebration.
Elevation: 3,100 m to 1,640 m
Distance: 10 km
Walking duration: Approximately 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane rainforest
