5-Day Family Safari in Tanzania | March Calving Season, Tarangire, Ndutu & Ngorongoro Crater

Morning Journey to the Highlands Following an early breakfast, your family will travel from Tarangire toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a transit covering roughly 220 kilometers. The drive takes around four to five hours, winding up the scenic Rift Valley escarpment, and your guide will include scheduled bathroom and viewpoint breaks to keep everyone comfortable.

Entering the Ndutu Plains As you descend from the crater highlands toward the short-grass plains, you officially enter the main setting for your Ndutu calving season safari. We will begin a gentle en-route game drive, looking out for the migratory wildebeest herds that often gather in this specific area during March.

Arrival at Camp In the late afternoon, we pull into your family-friendly camp so you can settle into your tents and wash off the safari dust. The evening is spent enjoying a warm meal while listening to the sounds of the African bush from the safety of the main dining lounge.

Morning Wildlife Tracking After breakfast, we head out into the Ndutu plains, aiming to locate the wildebeest mothers and their young calves. March is a highly active time for predators, and your guide will focus on positioning the vehicle for safe, educational viewings that fascinate children and adults alike while keeping a respectful distance from the wildlife.

Picnic Lunch and Rest To maximize our time in the bush without overtiring the kids, your guide will set up a picnic lunch under the shade of an acacia tree. If the children need a break from the midday heat, we can easily return to the camp for a few hours of downtime, as having the right family-friendly accommodation ensures a comfortable retreat.

Late Afternoon Exploration As the temperatures drop, we head out for a final afternoon drive, scanning the woodlands and marshes for cheetahs, lions, and giraffes. We return to the lodge before sunset for a relaxed family dinner and an early bedtime.

Morning Transit to the Crater We depart Ndutu after breakfast, driving approximately 80 kilometers back up into the cooler highlands, which takes about two to three hours depending on road conditions and passing wildlife. This relatively short morning drive allows the family to enjoy the shifting landscapes before reaching the crater rim.

Afternoon Crater Game Drive Upon arrival, we descend 600 meters to the caldera floor for an immersive Ngorongoro Crater safari, a naturally enclosed environment where wildlife is highly concentrated. Your guide will help the kids spot hippos, rhinos, and colorful birds while explaining the unique geology of this massive volcanic caldera.

Ascent and Evening Comfort Before the park closes, we drive back up the steep crater walls to your lodge located directly on the rim. The higher altitude means cooler evening temperatures, perfect for gathering around the dining room fireplace to recap the day’s favorite animal sightings with the family.

Morning Departure After a hearty breakfast at the lodge, your family will pack up and begin the final leg of your drive back to Arusha. The 190-kilometer drive is entirely on paved roads and takes about three to four hours of continuous driving.

En-Route Stops We will intentionally break up the drive with a stop in the vibrant town of Mto wa Mbu, where the family can stretch their legs, use the restrooms, and perhaps browse for a few handmade souvenirs to take home.

Arrival in Arusha You will arrive back in Arusha by the early afternoon, fully wrapping up your family's time in the bush. Your KiliPori Safaris guide will drop you off at your hotel or the airport for your onward travel plans.
