5-Day July Serengeti Great Migration & Balloon Safari from Zanzibar
Our 5 Days Serengeti Balloon Safari & Migration | Fly-In, Fly-Out is a private July 2027 Serengeti safari from Zanzibar combining the Great Wildebeest Migration with an early-morning hot-air balloon experience. You fly from Zanzibar to Kogatende Airstrip, spend 3 nights in Northern Serengeti, travel south by private 4×4 for 1 night in Central Serengeti, and fly from Seronera back to Zanzibar on Day 5.
July is the reason we give Northern Serengeti most of the itinerary. Migrating wildebeest and zebra generally move towards Kogatende and the Mara River ecosystem during this period, although their exact location changes according to rainfall, grazing and water. Our guide to how the Great Wildebeest Migration works explains the natural factors behind these movements.
The additional day compared with shorter fly-in safaris gives you 2 full days in Northern Serengeti. One includes the Serengeti balloon safari, followed by further wildlife viewing on the ground, while the other remains completely flexible for Great Migration game drives around Kogatende and the Mara River region.
The balloon flight adds a different perspective rather than replacing your game-drive time. You see the Serengeti landscape from above around sunrise before returning to your private 4×4 for wildlife viewing. Balloon operations remain subject to weather, safety conditions, passenger requirements and availability.
On Day 4, we game drive approximately 150–170 km south from Kogatende towards Seronera, allowing you to experience more of the Serengeti instead of flying between the two regions. Our Great Migration map and monthly wildebeest locations helps explain how Northern and Central Serengeti fit into the wider migration cycle.
What Makes This Migration & Balloon Safari Different
- Balloon safari over Serengeti: Experience an early-morning flight above the Serengeti before continuing wildlife viewing by 4×4.
- 3 nights in Northern Serengeti: More of your July safari is spent around Kogatende and the Mara River migration areas.
- 2 full Northern Serengeti days: You are not relying only on your arrival day to search for migration activity.
- Private ground safari: After your flights and balloon experience, your KiliPori Safaris vehicle and driver-guide are dedicated to your booking.
- One-way Serengeti route: Fly into Kogatende, game drive south and fly out from Seronera rather than backtracking.
- Central Serengeti finish: Spend your final night around Seronera for resident wildlife and convenient airstrip access.
- Zanzibar connection: The safari can start and finish in Zanzibar, making it easy to combine beach and wildlife experiences.
- Realistic migration expectations: We never guarantee the exact location of wildebeest or a Mara River crossing.

Tour Highlights
Day by Day Itinerary
Main Day Experience: Fly directly from Zanzibar into Northern Serengeti and start your July Great Migration game drive after landing.
Morning flight from Zanzibar
You depart Zanzibar on a scheduled bush flight to Kogatende Airstrip. Depending on the airline routing and intermediate airstrip stops, the journey generally takes approximately 2.5–4 hrs.
Meet your private safari guide
Our KiliPori Safaris driver-guide meets you at Kogatende with your private 4×4. After loading your luggage, your safari begins directly from the airstrip.
Afternoon migration game drive
Depending on your arrival time, we spend approximately 3–4 hrs exploring Northern Serengeti. Your guide uses current information to identify worthwhile migration and resident wildlife areas.
Settle into Northern Serengeti
We continue wildlife viewing towards camp, giving you your first introduction to the Kogatende landscape and the wider Mara River ecosystem.
Main Day Experience: Spend a full private safari day following the July Great Migration around Kogatende and the Mara River ecosystem.
Morning migration search
After breakfast, we begin approximately 3–4 hrs of game viewing. The day's route is determined by recent herd movements and wildlife activity.
Explore the Mara River
When migration conditions make it worthwhile, we explore accessible areas around the Mara River. Wildebeest may gather near the river, spread across surrounding plains or move between grazing areas.
A Mara River crossing cannot be guaranteed or scheduled. We balance time around possible crossing areas with other wildlife opportunities instead of spending the entire day waiting at one point.
Lunch & afternoon safari
After lunch, we continue for approximately 2–3 hrs, combining migration tracking with opportunities to see lions, elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and other Northern Serengeti wildlife.
For more context on migration timing, our guide to how the Great Wildebeest Migration works explains what influences the movement of the herds.
Main Day Experience: Enjoy a second full day in Northern Serengeti, giving you more time to respond to changing Great Migration movements.
Early wildlife search
We can start early and spend approximately 3–4 hrs exploring a different part of Northern Serengeti. Herd locations can change overnight, so your guide checks current conditions before deciding the day's direction.
Kogatende & northern plains
Depending on wildlife activity, we may explore Kogatende, the wider Mara River region or surrounding northern plains. This additional day means your migration experience does not depend on what happens during a single game drive.
Picnic lunch & break
We stop for lunch and some time outside the vehicle before continuing. Your private safari allows the day's pace to respond to wildlife rather than a shared group timetable.
Afternoon game drive
We continue for approximately 2–3 hrs, looking for migration herds, predators and resident wildlife before returning to camp.
Our guide on how many days you need for a Great Migration safari explains why additional time in the migration region can be valuable.
Main Day Experience: Game drive south from the northern migration areas to Central Serengeti, positioning close to tomorrow's balloon launch area.
Morning departure
After breakfast, we begin travelling south from Kogatende. Wildlife viewing continues throughout the journey rather than treating the day as a simple transfer.
Game drive towards Seronera
The journey to Central Serengeti covers approximately 150–170 km with around 4–5 hrs of direct driving. Wildlife stops, lunch, photography and road conditions make the complete journey longer.
Central Serengeti arrival
After reaching the Seronera region, we explore the area's plains, river systems and kopjes. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and other resident wildlife may be encountered.
Prepare for the balloon safari
We return to camp in good time for dinner and rest because tomorrow begins before sunrise. The exact balloon pickup time is confirmed by the balloon operator according to your camp and launch location.
You can also see how the northern and central regions fit into the seasonal cycle in our Great Migration map and monthly wildebeest locations.
Main Day Experience: Watch the sunrise from a hot-air balloon above Central Serengeti before flying from Seronera back to Zanzibar.
Pre-dawn balloon transfer
You are collected from camp before sunrise and transferred to the Central Serengeti balloon launch site. Transfer time varies according to the confirmed launch point and your camp location.
Hot-air balloon safari
After a safety briefing, you take off around sunrise for a balloon flight that typically lasts approximately 1 hr, depending on wind and operating conditions. The balloon follows the wind, so its exact route and the wildlife visible from the air cannot be predetermined.
Breakfast after landing
After landing, you enjoy the balloon operator's post-flight breakfast experience. The exact arrangements depend on the operator used for your confirmed safari.
Transfer to Seronera Airstrip
After breakfast, we reconnect with your KiliPori Safaris guide and continue towards Seronera Airstrip. If your flight schedule allows, the transfer can include some final wildlife viewing along the way.
Fly back to Zanzibar
You board your scheduled Seronera to Zanzibar flight. Depending on the airline routing and intermediate airstrip stops, the journey generally takes approximately 2.5–4 hrs, completing your 5 Days Serengeti Balloon Safari & Migration | Fly-In, Fly-Out in Zanzibar.
