8-Day January Northern Tanzania Family Safari | Ndutu Calving Season, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Scenic Drive Through Ngorongoro After breakfast, we depart Karatu and drive west into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, heading toward the Ndutu plains. This 3-hour (110 km) transit includes a stop at the stunning Ngorongoro Crater rim viewpoint, providing a fantastic family photo opportunity and a chance to stretch legs.

Arrival on the Calving Grounds We reach the Ndutu region by midday, greeting the spectacular sight of thousands of wildebeest and zebras. January marks the peak of the Ndutu calving season, and your family's afternoon game drive will focus on spotting newborn calves taking their first wobbly steps on the short-grass plains.

Settle into Your Safari Camp By late afternoon, we check into your family-friendly tented camp. The children can experience the thrill of sleeping under canvas (in secure, suite family tents), while parents relax on the veranda. The evening ends with storytelling by the campfire.

Early Morning Wildlife Activity We head out onto the plains early while the air is cool and wildlife is most active. Since this is a private tour, your guide caters entirely to your family's interests, patiently tracking cheetahs, lions, and hyenas that follow the migratory herds without feeling rushed.

Interactive Bush Picnic Around noon, we stop at a designated bush site. While enjoying a packed lunch, your guide will teach the kids how to identify different animal tracks and bird calls in the surrounding dirt an engaging, hands-on learning experience that brings the ecosystem to life.

Lake Ndutu & Relaxed Evening We spend the late afternoon driving near the shores of Lake Ndutu to look for pink flamingos and resident herbivores. Returning to camp by 5:00 PM ensures the children have ample time for a hot shower, board games in the lounge, and a restful dinner.

Game Drive Northward After breakfast, we pack up and slowly transition from the Ndutu plains into the world-famous Serengeti National Park. This 80 km drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours but acts as a continuous game drive, keeping the kids entertained as the landscape shifts from short grass to classic acacia savanna.

Exploring the Seronera Valley We arrive in the Central Serengeti (Seronera Valley) by midday. This region is renowned for its dense populations of resident big cats. Your afternoon is spent scanning the sausage trees for resting leopards and watching lion prides lounging on the riverbanks.

Camp Arrival in the Serengeti By late afternoon, we pull into your Serengeti tented camp. The family can unpack, freshen up, and gather in the main dining tent for a multi-course dinner, surrounded by the ambient sounds of the African bush.

Morning Game drive Exploration We dedicate today to exploring the heart of the Serengeti. In the morning, we drive toward the Moru or Simba Kopjes giant granite boulders protruding from the plains. These rocks serve as natural observation decks for lions, providing an exciting and highly visual target for children to spot.

Hot Camp Lunch & Midday Rest Rather than spending the entire day in the vehicle, we return to the camp for a hot, freshly prepared lunch. This midday break is crucial for families, giving younger children time to nap, read, or rest in the shade during the hottest hours of the day.

Golden Hour River Drive As the temperature drops around 3:30 PM, we head back out along the Seronera River to search for hippos, crocodiles, and elusive leopards preparing for the evening hunt. We return to camp just as the sun sets for dinner and campfire relaxation.

Final Serengeti Safari We enjoy one last morning game drive in the Central Serengeti, taking advantage of the golden morning light to photograph wildlife and search for any animals the kids haven't crossed off their checklist yet.

Ascent to the Ngorongoro Highlands After a picnic lunch, we begin the drive southeast toward the Ngorongoro highlands (approx. 140 km / 3.5 hours). The drive is scenic, transitioning from the dry plains back into cool, misty, high-altitude forests.

Views from the Crater Rim We check into a lodge situated right on, or very near, the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater. The family can enjoy breathtaking, panoramic views of the caldera below while bundling up in warm sweaters for a cozy, high-altitude dinner.

Early Descent into the Crater After an early breakfast, we make the steep, thrilling 600-meter descent onto the Ngorongoro Crater floor. This enclosed caldera is one of the most densely populated wildlife areas in the world, meaning fast-paced, frequent animal sightings that easily hold a child's attention.

Tracking the Black Rhino & Hippo Pool Lunch We spend 5 hours exploring the crater floor, specifically searching for the rare, endangered black rhino. At midday, we stop at the Ngoitokitok Springs hippo pool, where the family can eat lunch in the vehicle while safely watching hippos wallow in the water just yards away.

Ascent and Relaxation in Karatu In the early afternoon, we drive up the crater wall and take a short 45-minute drive to your lodge in Karatu. The family has the entire late afternoon to relax, swim in the pool, and enjoy the lush tropical gardens after a busy week of safaris.

Leisurely Morning & Optional Cultural Visit Your family can enjoy a much-deserved sleep-in and a relaxed breakfast at the lodge. On the drive back to Arusha, you have the option to stop in the lively village of Mto wa Mbu for a brief, child-friendly cultural walk, or visit a local banana plantation.

Return Drive to Arusha We complete the final 2.5-hour drive on paved roads back to Arusha, arriving by early afternoon. Your guide will drop your family off at your Arusha hotel or transfer you directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departing flight, concluding an unforgettable 2027 family adventure.
